We’re all guilty of them. We’ve all received a ticket from the Fashion Police at some point in our lives whether we want to admit it or not. I’m not simply talking about the wrong color for our skin tone or mismatched prints. I’m talking about the fashion mistakes that could happen to anyone. When something goes wrong in the way we shop or plan our outfits.
I’ve gathered a list of some of the most common fashion mistakes women make along with tips on how to avoid making them again. The tips on this list will help you to shop and plan your wardrobe in a way that will keep you comfortable and looking your best.
1. You Always Buy Your Clothes in the Same Size
When someone asks you what size you wear, you probably answer with a single number. Whether that number is 2, 6, 14, or 22, you’re pretty certain of your size, right? What if I told you that you were only partially correct? Unfortunately, the wardrobe sizing system is not universal. Different brands have different measurements and sizing systems. I know, why make things more difficult?
I hate to say that you may be a size 8 in one brand and a size 12 in another. That’s why it always pays to try on clothes before you buy them. If you’re shopping online, make use of the clothing size charts and buy the item of clothing closest to your body measurements. Amazon has a great program called Prime Wardrobe, which allows you to fill your box with potential items and only pay for the ones you decide to keep. It’s a great way to see what size works best for you.
2. You Think Baggy Clothes Hide Your Flaws
On the contrary, baggy clothes can make you look bigger than you actually are. If the clothes are sloppy, it may make someone form a negative opinion of you. There is a right way to wear loose fitting clothing. If there’s a part of your body that you detract from, such as a juicy tummy, try tunic tops with some skinny jeans or a pencil skirt.
Self-conscious about your calves? Try wearing dark tights instead of baggy pants. Pair them with a dark skirt or dress with a brightly patterned top or sweater. Bright colors on top will draw attention away from your legs. Since we’re headed into the fall season, it’s a great time to stock up on some tall boots.
3. Ignoring What’s In Your Closet
There’s nothing like going out and buying something new. When an event comes up, the first thing we think is that we have to get to the store to buy a new dress. What about the million dresses that are already in your closet? There’s no better satisfaction than from finding something “new” in your own closet. Hence the term, shop in your closet. Whenever I go in my closet, I find pieces that I’ve forgotten all about. I pull them out and add new life to them.
Worried about being seen in the same thing twice? Believe me, nobody remembers what you wore a year ago or even a week ago! You forgot you even owned the piece! We always think people are paying more attention to us than they actually are. In reality, they’ve got their own concerns. So go ahead. Pull that dress out and revive it with some fresh accessories. You’ll save a lot of money just shopping in your closet.
4. You Only Carry One Purse
I’m guilty of this as well. I personally hate changing purses because I always forget something. Still, it’s a great thing to have a good purse wardrobe. You don’t want to carry a heavy handbag with an evening dress. On the other hand, a small bag on a trip to the beach may not suit you as well. To create a basic starter purse wardrobe, collect some of these and build from there.
My favorite purse is the crossbody. It’s my personal everyday bag. I use it because I can’t stand carrying a purse every day and crossbody bags are easy to maneuver. Especially for my busy lifestyle.
Handbags are great for accompanying your business outfits and may even hold your tablets. Handbags are also great for the girls who have a little more to carry around or just don’t like crossbody bags.
Clutches are for the evening or formal events. Heavy bags just don’t go well with elegant gowns. Put your clutch bag to good use and do the trick the royals do. Keep your hands clutched to avoid shaking hands when you don’t want to!
Totes are great for family outings or trips to the beach. They’re good for when you have to carry a large amount of things or when you’re taking a short trip.
5. You Shop For Shoes First
I get it. Women love shoes. My mom has a million pairs. The problem with buying a million pair of shoes, you have so many and you may have nothing to wear them with. How many times do you think about what you’re going to wear with that cute pair of shoes you pick up in the store? You end up spending a lot of money on something you may not even wear.
When you go shopping, think about what you have in your wardrobe. Plan your outfits. Then, once you have what you’re going to wear, you can see if you really need to buy another pair of shoes.
None of these fashion mistakes are something to stress about. On the other hand, making these small changes will impact your wardrobe, and overall look, in a great way.
